Waverly Needlepoint Wool Custom Needlepoint Kits

If you have been on our website today, you will notice three changes.

#1.  We now offer Waverly needlepoint wool for our custom needlepoint kits.  This is a 3 ply wool that is similar to Paternayan.  The main difference with Waverly, is that all three plys are the same thickness.  It is made by the Brown Sheep Company right next door in Nebraska.  The wool is actually raised in our home state of Colorado!

#2.  10 and 12 mesh canvas are available on our online needlepoint designer. (see below)

#3.  The maximum needlepoint canvas size is no longer 13 x 19 inches, we’ve increased the maximum size to 40 inches wide!

This is brand new and we are still testing it, so if you encounter any problems, please email us.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Where’s the Color Come From?

We have some new needlepoint designs that use similar color choices and that is every bit intentional!  I like to get color concepts and trends from historic, vintage and even ancient art.  So here’s a bit about where the color is coming from this week…

The latest needlepoint pillow kits use the same color seen in ancient Turkish Iznik art.  Cobalt blue, red, and white are the main colors used and these beautiful designs.   The Iznik design can be seen tiled above doors and painted on pottery.   Sometimes lighter shades of blue and a bit of green are added into the mix, making a balanced blend of bright colors.  We loved the intricacy of the patterns in Iznik art and the colors seem to pop nicely for an accent pillow!

These designs are even seen  adorning walls, walkways and doors.  I thought it could be quite fun and challenging to try to stitch one of these in needlepoint.  Below is Needlepaint’s take on the Iznik color.  Enjoy!

Vintage Needlepoint Design Gets a Facelift!

I’ve been scouring used bookstores looking for needlepoint books.  It’s so much fun and among them I’ve  found found some great needlpoint designs.  What better than to give them new life in our needlepoint kits.  These old books can be so inspiring and I love making something new from something old.  Our Ambert Pillow kit is the first  example of design inspired from these vintage books.

All of our pillow kits can be personalized in your own color choice to fit in whatever cozy setting you are plan to create with them. The image below includes two different color options but we are happy to customize this kit to your color needs!

Do you have an idea for a needlepoint pillow kit or just want to share with us a awesome pillow, belt, or stocking?  Post to our facebook account!   We would love to hear your feed back and make other stitching friends!  Needle Paint is  constantly adding new designs so check out our website whenever you can! Happy stitching…

Great Needlepoint Picture Frames and Design Ideas

Often people ask what size their needlepoint canvas should be for their project.  We recommend sizes that are commonly available in stores as picture frames.  This project was one of them, and the customer created needlepoint designs to fit in 8 x 10 inch picture frames.

We shipped two custom needlepoint kits to her, and what I really love, is how she used a multiple image frame for the one with her boy  The second photo has less reflection and show her needlepoint much better.  Simple custom needlepoint designs look great!

The Multiple Image Frame for Needlepoint – Looks Great!!!

Simple Needlepoint Designs Look Great!

In case you are wondering, the most common frame sizes are:

For Rectangles:  5 x 7, 6 x 8, 8 x 10, 8.5 x 11, 9 x 12, 11 x 14

For Squares:  8 x 8, 10 x 10, and 12 x 12

JoAnn Fabrics and Michael’s Crafts both carry large selections of affordable frames that can be used for your needlepoint projects.

Beautifully Stitched Tiger Needlepoint Canvas

A while back, a customer contacted us about our tiger needlepoint canvas that we sell on etsy (look at our “animal” needlepoint section).  They loved the design, but prefer work on 12 mesh and wanted a much larger design to make a needlepoint pillow.

We ended up making a 15 inch wide by 11.25 inch high custom needlepoint canvas.  Since the customer prefers to stitch with wool, we included 1 skein of each color matched to the original photo, to help her purchase the correct colors from her local shop.

Really, this blog is about the stitching, not the words, so check out her work!

This is the preview of needlepoint design on 18 mesh canvas, a photo needlepoint project that comes out beautifully.  Thanks for the pics and your great stitching Joanne!!!

Please note, we do often adjust color palates to match animals better, so if you notice any colors you want adjusted with a design you are thinking about ordering, just let us know and we’ll be sure we make them.

Horse Needlepoint Pillow Canvases

We were recently contacted by a horse lover to help her design needlepoint pillows for her house.

Well, she was actually only looking to buy one pillow, but she liked both designs so much, we ended up doing two needlepoint canvases!

We started with the words: “Horses are who we are not what we do”

That, and she was looking for a clean “Ralph Lauren” feeling design. Below are two options we emailed to her.

Clean Needlepoint Pillow Design for Horse Lovers (option 1)

Prancing Horse Needlepoint Pillow Design (option 2)

The customer loved the first option, but after seeing the prancing horse, she mentioned that she had been looking for a custom needlepoint canvas with a horse jumping over an oxer for years.   This project took a bit more effort, as first I had learn what an oxer was (the first try was not an option, as the form was bad, and the picture is actually a vertical single fence)

Needlepoint Design of Horse Jumping (first attempt)

The second attempt took more skill in the digital design, using photoshop.  But, this one came out perfect.  The best part of the project is that I was watching the Olympics equestrian team jumping and knew exactly what they were talking about!  The horses are amazing!

The canvases came out so well, I wanted to be sure you got see them.  Also note, that we added an extra 3 stitches around the sides so when this gets turned into a pillow, the design will not be cropped.

Fun Needlepoint Patterns – Iznik

One of our projects last week was based on a Iznik tile.  The needlepoint pattern came out great on the canvas!

Iznik Needlepoint Pattern

The pattern is so beautiful, it got me looking for more Iznik tiles that would make beautiful patterns for needlepoint and needlepoint canvases.

Here are a few of my favorites!

The history of Iznik pottery is quite interesting.  Originally from Turkey, there are many examples in museums and palace walls.  Wikipedia has a good amount of information online on the subject, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iznik_pottery but the most fun way to browse these amazing patterns is to go to: http://images.google.com and type in “Iznik Tiles”.  Enjoy!

Beautiful Needlepoint Flower Inspiration

I was going through my camera over the weekend and came across one of the beautiful needlepoint canvases we made a few months back.

The color on these lilies came out really well, I am looking forward to seeing this needlepoint kit finished!
