This is the stitch of choice for chair seats, upholstery items or any piece that will receive wear and tear. It is durable and flexible and the finished piece does not warp as much as those done in the Half-Cross or Continental Stitches. It is truly a background stitch to be done around designs. I didn\u2019t use it anywhere on the <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/22\/finishing-a-needlepoint-yarmulke\/\">yarmulkes<\/a><\/span> I made, but I did use it for the purple border of my <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/14\/needlepoint-a-quilt\/\">Pansy Quilt Rug<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Basketweaveback-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4241 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Basketweaveback-1-300x292.jpg\" width=\"233\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Basketweaveback-1-300x292.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Basketweaveback-1.jpg 607w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Basketweave-diagram.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Basketweave-diagram.png\" alt=\"Basketweave diagram\" width=\"259\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>View of the Basketweave Stitch back side (Figure 1) and\u00a0Basketweave Stitch diagram (Figure 2)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Continental Stitch is also a good backing stitch. It lacks the durability of the Basketweave Stitch but can be worked in small areas, while providing a solid backing (as shown\u00a0in Figure 3). My <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/24\/hats-are-fab-add-a-needlepoint-hat-band\/\">hat bands<\/a> <\/span>are usually done entirely in Continental Stitches. The <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.needlepaint.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/29\/the-no-tears-needlepoint-pillow\/\">No Tears Pillow<\/a><\/span> was also done entirely in Continental Stitch. It does not cover the canvas well and should only be used on printed canvases where the thread color matches the color of the print. Too fine a thread will not cover adequately, and too heavy a thread will be difficult with which to work and will usually create uneven stitches.
